Long Baseline Polarimetry of 3 C 273 and 3 C 279 with the Coordinated Millimeter VLBI Array

چکیده
86 GHz Very Long Baseline Polarimetry probes magnetic field structures within the cores of Active Galactic Nuclei at higher angular resolutions and a spectral octave higher than previously achievable. Observations of 3C 273 and 3C 279 taken in April 2000 with the Coordinated Millimeter VLBI Array have resulted in the first total intensity (Stokes I) and linear polarization VLBI images reported of any source at 86 GHz. These results reveal the 86 GHz electric vector position angles within the jets of 3C 273 and 3C 279 to be orthogonal to each other, and the core of 3C 273 to be unpolarized. If this lack of polarization is due to Faraday depolarization alone, the dispersion in rotation measure is &90000 rad m−2 for the core of 3C 273. VLBI observations of 3C 273 at 22GHz and 43GHz. I: Search for short time-scale structural variation
The results of VLBI observations of the quasar 3C 273, obtained during a multi-frequency campaign in late 1992 in the radio, millimeter and X-ray bands are presented and discussed. The VLBI observations were made at 22 GHz with a Global Array and at 43 GHz with the Very Long Baseline Array. Hybrid maps and modelfits were made in order to look for any short time scale structural variations of th...
متن کاملConcurrent 43 and 86 Ghz Very Long Baseline Polarimetry of 3c273
We present sub-milliarcsecond resolution total intensity and linear polarization VLBI images of 3C 273, using concurrent 43 and 86 GHz data taken with the Very Long Baseline Array in May 2002. The structure seen in the innermost jet suggest that we have fortuitously caught the jet in the act of changing direction. The polarization images confirm that the core is unpolarized (fractional polariza...

Context. Short time-scale flux density variations of flat spectrum radio sources are often explained by the scattering of radio waves in the turbulent ionized Interstellar Matter of the Milky Way. One of the most convincing observational arguments in favor of this is the annual modulation of the variability time-scale caused by the Earth orbital motion around the Sun. J1128+5925 is a recently d...
متن کاملDetecting Changing Polarization Structures in Sagittarius A* with High Frequency Vlbi
Sagittarius A* is the source of near infrared, X-ray, radio, and (sub)millimeter emission associated with the supermassive black hole at the Galactic Center. In the submillimeter regime, Sgr A* exhibits time-variable linear polarization on timescales corresponding to <10 Schwarzschild radii of the presumed 4 × 106 M black hole. In previous work, we demonstrated the potential for total-intensity...

We monitored 3C 273 with VLBI at 15–86 GHz since 1990. We discuss component trajectories, opacity effects, a rotating jet, and outburst-ejection relations from Gamma-ray to radio bands.
